Operating a portfolio of 78 operating marine and inland terminals supported by over 50 related businesses in over 40 countries across six continents with a significant presence in both high-growth and mature markets. DP World wanted a VR experience that served for a variety of functions – as a sales tool, an attraction and an educational experience. Therefore, it needed to be informational yet entertaining, needed to convey a sense of scale but also allow users to drill into details. We created a VR experience whereby users get a narrated guided tour of the state-of-the-art facilities, learning about the services offered as well as experiencing 360 views of the site.
We wanted to create the ultimate model city but one that all individuals can experience, conveying the buzz of activity on the site -cranes picking up containers, ships coming into port and lorries scurrying around the site. The environment was built from the 2D master plans using the existing constructions as a guide. Once the model was built, dynamic lighting, animations, informational hotspots and navigation options were added. Furthermore, we integrated existing panoramas and videos and allowed the user to move around the site selecting points of interest using hand gestures. The experience can be enjoyed as a guided tour through an animated virtual guide built through our own motion capture system or one where the user can take control and explore the park freely. Additionally, users can even fly to space to see how the port integrates with the world’s major shipping routes and other DP World facilities around the world.
The experience was debuted at Transport Logistic expo in Munich. DP World was additionally supplied with extra portable VR hardware to utilize at other forthcoming events.
